Disciplines of a Believer

Christians are to also exhibit a moderation in what they drink. The Bible is very specific about alcoholic beverages. It strongly warns about its dangers, going so far as to say, “Do not look on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it swirls around smoothly” (Proverbs 23:31).

Having said that, in all fairness, it must also be stated that the Bible never forbids the use of alcohol; rather, it forbids being controlled or intoxicated by it. That’s not to say that it’s wise to socially or publicly consume wines and liquors, because in American culture, drinking is seen as something in which Christians do not participate. Therefore, a Christian who consumes alcohol, even in moderation avoiding drunkenness, will perhaps be seen as hypocritical.

Another reason it is wise for Christians to avoid alcohol is the ease in which a Christian can become intoxicated or impaired by it. It is known fact that as little as one can of beer impairs coordination and visual perception. Although it is slight, there is impairment. Why run the risk of not stopping in time and become slightly impaired? Why put yourself in a position of coming close to drunkenness or possible addiction to alcohol?

Finally, how can a Christian parent reason with their children against the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse while consuming strong drink themselves? How do you plead with your children to not dabble with drugs when you do? In this case, moral footing is lost.

Moderation and discipline needs to be exercised with other types of beverages such as soft drinks. Medical research has produced an almost insurmountable pile of data proving the harmful effects of soft drinks on the human body. Therefore, such should be consumed in strict moderation.
