With the approval and authority of Christ, the apostles traveled near and far planting churches and teaching the doctrine of Christ. Their word was given the same credence as the Lord Jesus Christ by the early church. Why? Because the early church recognized the authority that Christ had given to these men. The writer to the Hebrews acknowledged that the gospel of the apostles was the same gospel of Christ. Their message was to be taken seriously and not rejected.
How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him. (Hebrews 2:3)
In this Jesus gave His ringing endorsement of the New Testament since it was mainly apostles who contributed to its composition.
THE TEST OF THE APOSTLES’ ENDORSEMENT
Because of Jesus’ mandate and commissioning of the apostles their writings could be deemed inspired. The apostles recognized the authority God gave them and their message. For example, the Apostle Paul claims to write with the authority of God.
If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. (1 Corinthians 14:37)
For even if I should boast somewhat more about our authority, which the Lord gave us for edification and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed. (2 Corinthians 10:8)
