If God has planted within us all an intuitive revelation of Himself, why then don’t all believe in His existence and serve Him? The answer is man has a problem, and it is one of his own doing. It’s called sin. Sin keeps man’s understanding of God from growing. Our innate understanding of God is corrupted as a result of rebellion against God. When Adam and Eve sinned against God, man’s nature took a cataclysmic hit. It was radically altered. The desires of the human heart shifted away from God and toward self. Also instinctive, due to the fall, is the human inclination to deflate the worth of God and inflate man’s worth. As a result, in a wholesale way people have rejected the authority of God to rule them. Instead, man has deified his own worth and bows before the shrine of human passion, power, and performance.
God’s response to man’s refusal to worship and serve Him is to release man to his own heart, to follow his own desires apart from God. He has allowed man’s mind and core beliefs to become perverted and nothing more than a shadow of the original intent.
Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves. (Romans 1:24)
And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting. (Romans 1:28)
