Disciplined In Entertainment
Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. (1 Peter 4:1-4)
Perhaps unlike any previous Christian generation, our generation must be disciplined in our entertainment. We are in the midst of a time when people anesthetize themselves from life by the means of entertainment. With all the technology at hand, entertainment can be pumped into our hearts and minds 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Entertainment per se is not evil. There is nothing wrong with pleasure. But on the other hand, an obsession with being entertained is deadly. Soberness is a necessary ingredient to the Christian life. Men and women perish all around us. We must not let a frivolity steal our most serious resolve to walk circumspectly and wisely for there is an enemy that salivates for our destruction. Therefore, a discipline in our entertainment must be practiced. We must not forget the warning of Jesus in the parable of the four soils, “Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity” (Luke 8:14).
