Disciplines of a Believer

Indecent exposure or dress that accentuates one’s sexuality would certainly not be God honoring nor respectful. Any type of clothing that draws attention to the body rather than frames the face is to be avoided. Paul also speaks of moderation again. He says, “with propriety and moderation.” What is the significance of using the word moderation again? This word moderation means self-control. In other words, discipline is required to not follow the cultural fashion trend.

But also it means self-control concerning extravagance. Paul continues to explain modesty as, “not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing.” Not only must our clothing not be sensual or immodestly cover the body, but it must also not be lavish in looks or price.

Lastly, whatever modest is, it is “proper for women professing godliness, with good works” (1 Timothy 2:10). In other words, it brings glory to God. It is in keeping with reflecting to the world the winsomeness of Christ.

Disciplined In Speech

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. (Ephesians 4:29)

Speech comes from the heart; it reflects the spirit within. Our Lord said that out of the fullness of heart the mouth speaks. Like a fountain filled beyond its capacity the heart overflows through the mouth as much as the deeds of a man.
