How to Interpret Gods Word Part 2

An example is 1 Corinthians 15:29, “Otherwise, what will they do who are baptized for the dead, if the dead do not rise at all? Why then are they baptized for the dead?” Over forty interpretations of that passage have been offered in the history of the church. Mormons are quite sure what it means, of course, but the reason why they are sure is because they are reading it in the context of other books that they claim are inspired and authoritative. There is no other verse in the Bible to structure their views.

For this reason we cannot base doctrine on a single verse. If you do, you will be more than likely making that single verse to speak what you want it to say. It will be more or less your opinion and nothing more.

Be Sensitive to Changes in Cultures and Customs When Making Application.

Although it is the reader’s responsibility to understand the text in the historical context, you must realize that cultures change and the text cannot be applied quite the same. For example, 1 Thessalonians 5:26 says, “Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.” The French kiss each other, as do many Eastern Europeans. Are Americans being disobedient by not kissing each other?
