The Existence of God Part One

The Dignity of God Demands This Approach

If you were talking to someone you would not demand they prove their existence because such would be insulting, why then do we demand God to prove He exists? Does not God have dignity of personhood and should be shown courtesy and respect? Do not misunderstand, I’m not saying to discuss the question of God’s existence is discourteous; rather, let the reader be aware of the discourtesy with which we often approach the sovereign God of the universe. There is something in the human heart that does not want to give the same due we would give to a fellow human being. What is so arrogant about us that we treat the Creator with less respect than a person deserves? Why is it man’s fatal mission to refuse to render the due of God’s value and worth? The problem is not intellectual; it is spiritual.

The Lord God demonstrates His worth and His superiority over His creation by not trying to prove His existence. God does not pander, nor does He feel moved to sit in the witness chair and answer our outlandish questions. He did that once and once only, when He stood as a man before a kangaroo court where He was insulted. The very question asked that night insulted the dignity of Jesus when asked, “Are You then the Son of God?” It was the only time He opened His mouth. It was the only question He answered. “He said to them, ‘You rightly say that I am’” (Luke 22:70). Be careful why you question the validity of God. It may reveal more about the depravity of your heart than the inquisitiveness of your mind.
